Class Information
Class Teacher: Mrs S Greening
Year Group Teaching Assistants: Mrs K Pare, Mrs N Brown and Mrs S Marshall
Welcome to Dolphin Class (Year 4)
Mrs Greening teaches Year 4, with both Year 4 classes supported by friendly and experienced teaching assistants.
Year 4 is about building on those milestones and basic skills the children have learnt in Year 3. We encourage the children to really use their thinking and reasoning skills, joining in class discussions and offering opinions and suggestions based on their knowledge so far.
English takes a magical turn as we study Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. We also wander through the wardrobe into Narnia and meet the White Witch and Aslan. We hope to develop a love of reading through a range of genres, increase fluency and comprehension and explore themes, settings and characters in fiction and non-fiction. Pupils will write for range of purposes and audiences – planning, drafting, editing and evaluating all whilst focusing on improving grammar, punctuation and spelling.
We continue to study the Bronze Age – Vikings in Britain in addition to Ancient Egypt. We build on the geographical knowledge we were developing in KS1 and Year 3 and continue to study earthquakes and volcanoes as well as rivers and mountains in Europe and North America.
In Year 4, we move into sets for our Maths lessons. Both sets work on the same concepts, but one set may have additional adult support, use of extra manipulatives or spend a little longer consolidating understanding of a concept before moving on.
Children in Year 4 sit the mandatory government Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). This will be a focus in Maths from September with the MTC taking place in June 2025. Knowing all the times tables fluently is such an important skill that can be transferred to all areas of Maths, so we encourage all the children to practise these as frequently as possible. To assist children in their learning outside of school, each child will have access to Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) as well as other free apps and practical learning strategies.
Lastly, we ensure to follow the national curriculum for the primary curriculum in England for programmes of study and attainment targets for KS2.
Timetable
Our timetable can be downloaded below. Here, parents and pupils have the opportunity to view the class schedule to see the day-to-day routine including the range of curriculum that is covered. We have found that children with SEND have responded well to visually see the structure of the day ahead.
Terms/Topic Information
Here at Cliffe Woods Primary, we produce a year group newsletter every other term, communicating the key topics that will be covered, these can be found below.
More Information about the subjects can be found on our curriculum pages.
