Cliffe Woods Primary School

Thanks to the eagle eyed and quick thinking Mrs Hyland KS2 were lucky enough to get a visit from the wonderful people at Google who showed the children Google Expeditions.  Using Google Cardboard, a cardboard headset that holds a smartphone the children were able to experience 360 degree pictures using virtual reality.

Using a standard tablet teachers where able to view the pictures and move them by swiping the screen. They could then mark points of interest.

The children would then see an arrow showing them which direction to look. A white circle would then show the area highlighted by the teacher.

As you can see from the video below their first experience of virtual reality was exciting.

Many of the expeditions covered subjects that the children had been learning about.

Year 5 looked at a virtual heart, followed by Rio during the day and then at night.

Year 3 and 4 took a visit to the Smithsonian Museum and took a look at space rocks and then a look at the Grand Canyon from the air.

The video below show what happened when year 6 suddenly found themselves looking down on a bridge in San Paulo, Brazil.

The beauty of Google Expeditions was that all the technology was so simple to use that teachers were able to use it easily and confidently after just 5 minutes training.

Apart from some safety pointers about not wandering around with the head sets on, holding them securely and stopping if they felt sick the children only needed to be told to follow the white arrow to find where their teacher wanted them to look.

But the real test of any technology is of course what the children thought about it. Here is what they said.

Adam: It was a fun experience, real life and clever, you got to do tasks that you wouldn't normally do.

Poppy: It was really cool as you felt you were actually there.

Millie: It was amazing, it felt like I was superman flying! It was so cool that as you moved your head you saw different places.

Daniel: I really liked the famous landmarks like Grand Canyon. I would love to have one at home.

Harry: Wow it was so clever!

Ellie: It was so exciting as you didn't know what to expect

Violet: It was really enjoyable as it felt so real.

Olivia: It was so good as you got to see things that you wouldn't normally be able to.
